  • In January of 2019, the Duneland School Corporation will celebrate its 50th anniversary of its incorporation.

The Duneland School District was formed after voters from Westchester Township, Jackson Township, Liberty Township and parts of Pine Township agreed to the incorporation of the new school district.

As part of the celebration, students at Chesterton High School (CHS) Student Government (StuGov) leaders organized the purchase of four (4) wooden benches with help from local supporters. The benches were built by the CHS Building Trades classes and designed and hand-painted by CHS students with mascots that represent the townships that were incorporated into the Duneland School Corporation in 1969. These benches are now on display for student, parent and the public during school hours at four of the Duneland Schools. The Liberty Township bench is located at Liberty Intermediate School, Westchester Township at Westchester Intermediate, Jackson Township at Jackson Elementary and the Duneland School Corporation bench is located inside Entrance 1 at Chesterton High School.

In the spring of 2019, the benches will be auctioned off at the annual Duneland Education Foundation Gala in April. Community members or alumni of these former township schools may wish to bid on one of the benches to benefit the Duneland Education Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides financial resources to enhance opportunities for educational experiences for all K-12 students of the Duneland community.
