Summer School 2017
Elementary Summer School: Summer Reading Connection
Duneland School Corporation’s 2017 summer school program, The Summer Reading Connection (SRC), is an engaging literacy program designed to meet the needs of students of all reading levels. SRC is an incentive program designed to motivate students who want to read more and get better at reading. The program includes a class for struggling readers and those third-grade students who were not successful on the IREAD-3 State Assessment.
Classes will focus on the five essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The comprehension strategies utilize prediction, context clues, questioning, main idea, and summarizing, as well as developing the answering skill of QAR (question/answer/relationship). Classes may include interdisciplinary literature activities, independent and cooperative projects, and written responses to literature materials to supplement the program. Use of technology as a reading tool will also be incorporated.
All activities comply with Indiana Academic Standards. Good literature will be the springboard for many reading and educational activities.
