Congratulations Teachers and Employee of the Year 2026

The Duneland School Corporation is proud to announce the winners of the 2026 "Teacher of the Year" and "Employee of the Year" Recognition Program. The winners are:

ELEMENTARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Brandi Beckwith - Brummitt Elementary School

Brandi Beckwith, a third-grade teacher at Brummitt Elementary, is the recipient of the Duneland School Corporation Elementary Teacher of the Year award in recognition of her exceptional dedication to students, passion for learning, and commitment to creating a joyful and inclusive classroom environment. A highly experienced educator with more than a decade in the classroom, Beckwith holds a strong foundation in elementary education and continues to grow professionally through ongoing training and leadership roles within her school. With more than a decade of teaching experience, Beckwith is known for her ability to foster meaningful connections with her students while maintaining high academic expectations.

A proud Chesterton graduate, Beckwith’s commitment to her community is deeply personal. Having been shaped by the very schools she now serves, she strives to provide her students with the same encouragement and support that once helped her discover her own strengths. She believes that every child is unique and deserving of recognition, and she works intentionally to ensure each student feels seen, valued, and celebrated. Her classroom is built on relationships, where students are encouraged to take risks, support one another, and find confidence in their abilities.

Beckwith’s teaching is defined by energy, creativity, and a genuine love for learning. She creates an engaging environment filled with movement, laughter, and collaboration, where “light bulb” moments are celebrated and learning becomes an exciting, shared experience. She embraces a growth mindset not only for her students but for herself, continually seeking new strategies, attending professional development, and bringing innovative ideas back to her classroom. Her willingness to evolve ensures that she meets the diverse needs of all learners through differentiated instruction and thoughtful integration of new approaches.

Beyond her classroom, Beckwith is a leader within her school community. She serves as a Third Grade Level Coordinator, mentors future educators, participates in building initiatives, and contributes to programs that support students and families. Her collaborative spirit and dedication to continuous improvement make her a valued colleague and role model among her peers.

Her impact is powerfully reflected in the words of her recommender, who writes, “One of her greatest strengths is her unwavering positive attitude. She approaches each day with enthusiasm and optimism, creating a welcoming and encouraging classroom environment where students feel safe to take risks and be themselves. Her positivity is contagious, inspiring both her students and colleagues.”

Brandi Beckwith is being recognized not only for her excellence in teaching, but for the lasting impact she has on her students and school community. Her passion, positivity, and commitment to helping every child grow academically and personally embody the very best of the teaching profession.


 

SECONDARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Terry Chestovich - RISE Academy

Terry Chestovich, RISE Academy Coordinator and Teacher in the Duneland School Corporation, is the recipient of the Secondary Teacher of the Year award in recognition of his exceptional dedication to students and his transformative impact in alternative education. A graduate of Chesterton High School, Chestovich brings more than 25 years of experience in education and coaching, building a career defined by compassion, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to student success.

At RISE Academy, Chestovich has been instrumental in creating a safe, structured, and student-centered environment where learners can rediscover their potential. Through individualized instruction and mentorship, he meets each student where they are, helping them overcome obstacles and regain confidence. His efforts have contributed to consistent success, with the program supporting an average of 50 to 60 graduates each year.

Chestovich’s approach extends beyond academics, as he fosters meaningful connections and equips students with skills for life after high school. His innovative work includes hands-on learning opportunities such as a hydroponic gardening program, along with community partnerships that provide real-world experiences. By tailoring motivation strategies to each student, he encourages growth and celebrates every achievement.

His impact is perhaps best captured by his recommender, who wrote, “What truly sets Mr. Chestovich apart is his unwavering commitment to students, particularly those who have struggled in traditional settings. He builds authentic relationships and often serves as a coach, mentor, and trusted adult. He sees potential where others may not and works to help students recognize it in themselves.”

In addition to his work at RISE Academy, Chestovich has an extensive background in athletics, serving as both a head and assistant football coach, as well as coaching wrestling and track. These experiences have strengthened his ability to instill discipline, resilience, and teamwork—qualities evident in both his classroom and his students.

Chestovich holds a Master of Arts in Physical Education and Coaching from Ball State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education, Health, and Coaching from the University of Mary. Known for his professionalism, integrity, and genuine care for others, he is widely respected by colleagues, students, and families.

Terry Chestovich receives this award not only for his excellence as an educator, but for his lasting impact on the lives of his students. His ability to inspire young people to overcome challenges and achieve success embodies the very best of the teaching profession.


EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

Marie Herring -  Jackson Elementary - ExL Instructional Aide

Marie Herring, an instructional aide in the Exceptional Learning Applied Skills classroom at Jackson Elementary, is the recipient of the Duneland School Corporation Employee of the Year award in recognition of her lifelong dedication to students with special needs and her extraordinary commitment to serving others. With an impressive 37-year career as a special education teacher prior to her retirement, Herring has devoted her life to helping students with moderate and severe disabilities grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Even in retirement, her passion for this work has not wavered, as she continues to make a meaningful impact in the classroom each day.

Herring brings a wealth of experience, compassion, and expertise to her role, creating a structured and supportive environment where every student feels valued and capable. She is deeply committed to meeting each child’s unique needs through individualized instruction, hands-on learning opportunities, and consistent encouragement. Her ability to connect with students and build trusting relationships fosters confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging. For Herring, the most rewarding moments come when students experience success and take pride in their accomplishments—moments that continue to drive her dedication to the profession she believes she was called to do.

Her commitment extends far beyond the school day. She is known for her reliability, selflessness, and willingness to go above and beyond for both students and colleagues. She frequently stays after school to prepare materials, develop engaging activities, and collaborate on strategies that will best support student growth. Despite the demands of her role, she approaches each day with positivity, patience, and unwavering care. Her presence has become a cornerstone of the classroom, and the relationships she builds with students are both meaningful and lasting.

Herring’s impact is perhaps best reflected in the words of her recommender, who shares, “She is not here for the money or recognition… she is here every day giving back every ounce of her experience and love to our students.” This statement captures the heart of her service—selfless, passionate, and rooted in a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of children.

Marie Herring is being recognized not only for her decades of excellence in special education, but for her continued commitment to students and her willingness to give her time, energy, and expertise to help others succeed. Her compassion, dedication, and lasting impact on countless students make her truly deserving of the Duneland Employee of the Year honor.


The winners were awarded at their respective school/work locations by DSC administrators.

The 2026 winners will be recognized at the May 4, 2026 School Board meeting, Beginning of the Year Programs in August, in DSC publications, website, and social media and on a plaque displayed at Central Office. Winners will also receive a classroom/office door banner along with a monetary stipend of $500.  Thank you to 1st Source Bank, Lane One Foundation and Ellis Electric for sponsoring the recognition program. In addition, all winners will be eligible for statewide recognition as part of the Indiana Department of Education competition.
