How do I find out what school my child should attend?

If you are unsure which elementary school your child should attend, you may contact transportation (219) 983-3615.  By providing your address, transportation personnel will inform you of your child’s school. You may also visit Welcome to Duneland-Building Locations-Attendance Boundaries to find your child’s school.

    What happens at Kindergarten Round-Up?

Parents and/or guardians will provide school personnel a copy of your child’s birth certificate, show proof of residency, provide your child’s immunization record, and complete enrollment forms.  Turn in paperwork including requested forms.  These  may be completed at Round Up or prior to Round Up. Different stations are set up for families to visit.  Some of the stations include: paperwork, transportation, nursing, classrooms, play area, and photos.

What should I bring to Round-Up?

    • Copy of the child’s birth certificate

    • Copy of the child’s immunization record

    • Proof of residency: e.g. Current mortgage statement or lease agreement OR two of the following with the current address on it – paycheck stub, current utility bill, current bank statement, vehicle registration, EOB from health insurance, etc. (proof must be current).

    • Any custody or guardianship paperwork, if applicable

Should I bring my child to Kindergarten Round Up?

Yes, please bring your future kindergartner to round up, see a kindergarten classroom, possibly ride a bus, and meet future classmates.

What should I do if I live with a Duneland resident and I do not own or rent the home?

You will need a letter from the homeowner stating you and your student(s) reside at their home.  You will also need the homeowners' proof of residency (see list above). In addition, a piece of mail (e.g. bank or wage statement, phone bill, car registration, Dept. of Children and Family Services) addressed to yourself with the current address.

What is the difference between ENROLLMENT and  REGISTRATION?

Student Enrollment is the one-time process of arranging to attend Duneland School Corporation. Once a student is enrolled with Duneland School Corporation, they are eligible to proceed with registration.
Registration is the yearly process of reviewing and updating student information typically done electronically prior to the start of school.

Why is it important for me to register my child now?

During the Kindergarten Round-Up, future students will have a chance to see the school and classroom, take a ride on a bus (after 4:00 pm), and meet the Kindergarten teachers and other school personnel.  Kindergarten Round-Up also helps schools to know how many kindergarten students to expect.

Is there an opportunity to tour my child’s school before school starts?

Yes. All elementary schools will offer a Back-to-School Open House prior to school starting in August 2024.

What are the requirements for admission to kindergarten?

A child must be five years old on or before August 1.

Are there any exceptions for a child who is not five by August 1?

Yes. DSC’s Policy 5112 also permits a parent or legal guardian to request a waiver of the August 1 date if the child’s fifth birthday falls between August 2 and October 1, of the upcoming school year. For further details about early entrance requirements, please refer to the tab on Duneland’s website marked:  Application for Early Entrance to Kindergarten

When will I be notified of the name of my child’s kindergarten teacher?

For students attending Bailly, Brummitt, Jackson and Liberty Elementary School:

Teacher names will be available through Skyward, our online student information system, by August 9.  Parents can access Skyward from the Duneland School Corporation website (Skyward Parent Access)

    For students attending Yost Elementary:

Students will be participating in a pilot program for the 2024-2025 school year. Specific details regarding teacher assignment will be provided at Kindergarten Round-Up, through the school website or by contacting the school directly.
