• The Duneland School Corporation voluntarily participated in testing at all nine (9) of its school buildings and two (2) support service buildings for radon over the school holiday break in December 2018.  Test results revealed that none of the student occupied school facilities tested positive for radon gas concentrations.

    Amereco, Inc., (Amereco), assisted in the collection of radon samples in conformance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Radon Measurement in Schools document 402-R-92-014 issued July 1993, and in general conformance with the Protocol for Conducting Measurements of Radon and Radon Decay Products in Schools and Large Buildings ANSI/AARST MALB 2014.

    Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless naturally occurring radioactive gas. Radon is made from the natural breakdown (decay) of uranium which can be found in soil and rock throughout the United States. Radon can travel through soil and enter buildings through cracks and other holes in the foundation. EPA studies have found that background radon concentration in outdoor air average approximately 0.4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). However, due to the possibility of radon entering through cracks and other holes in foundations, indoor concentrations may accumulate to much higher concentrations.

    According to the EPA, "Radon is a known human carcinogen. Prolonged exposure to elevated radon concentrations causes an increased risk of lung cancer. Like other environmental pollutants, there is some uncertainty about the magnitude of radon health risks. However, scientists are more certain about radon risks than risks from most other cancer-causing pollutants." The EPA has set the action level at 4.0 pCi/L.
