Department of Support Services

The Support Services Department is responsible for the support services necessary for the day to day operations of the school district and facility planning/construction. The department is divided into four areas as outlined below.

Mechanical Maintenance
The mechanical maintenance section is responsible for maintenance and central control of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems in all district facilities. They are also responsible for plumbing, electrical, and maintenance of wells and sewage treatment plant.

Buildings and Grounds, Custodial
The buildings and grounds section is responsible for general building maintenance, landscape maintenance, athletic field maintenance, snow removal, integrated pest management, and transportation of materials and equipment between buildings. Custodial includes management of staff, procuring supplies, scheduling summer cleaning, and scheduling substitute custodians.

Food Service
The goal of the Duneland Schools Food Service Program is to feed the students menus that will meet meal pattern requirements that provide students with one third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for key nutrients and calories. Federal and state regulations, as well as policies that the local board of education deems necessary govern the school breakfast and lunch program.

The school lunch program is designed to provide high quality, nutritious meals to all students in school. Eligible students can receive meals free or at a reduced price. To apply for free or reduced lunches, see your school office to obtain the appropriate forms needed for approval.

A school meal assures that your child is receiving a nutritionally balanced meal. More variety is easier to achieve through school menus. Also, the school meals are less expensive than a meal of equal nutritional value prepared and packed at home. A better-nourished student will generally have more energy to cope with school day opportunities.

Transportation
Duneland School's Transportation Department is responsible for the day to day transportation of students within the 92 square miles of the District servicing 10 schools as well as St. Patrick's Catholic School. Nine buses are specifically designed to handle the requirements of students with special needs. With a fleet of eighty seven buses and a large geographic area to cover, the Transportation Department utilizes a computerized bus routing system to optimize bus routes.

In addition to day to day operations, the Transportation Department provides buses for field trips, co and extra curricular trips, and some community transportation for local festivals. The department also maintains several "Special Purpose Vehicles" for the purpose of transporting smaller groups to various events. Staff members are trained in the use of the "SPV's" to provide the safest possible transportation of students.

All bus drivers are local community members and must meet strict federal and state requirements before being licensed to transport children. Buses are inspected annually by the Indiana State Police to ensure the safest fleet possible for the transportation of students.
