CMS Clubs and Activities


Art Club

Open to 7th and 8th graders. Art club meets once a week after school for an hour. This is a time for students to work on their classwork or outside community projects.

Student Council

Open to 7th and 8th graders, selected at the beginning of the school year. Sponsors parties, food drives, fundraisers, school improvement activities and more. Promotes leadership skills.

Trojan Times (Newspaper)

Open to 7th and 8th graders. This group provides an opportunity for students to produce a monthly school newspaper, featuring things important to them and information about school activities. Creative writing and basics of journalism are explored.

Book/ Reader’s Club

Open to 7th and 8th graders. This group is made up of students who love to read and discuss what you read.

Concessions Club

Open to 7th and 8th graders. This club is for students who have good math skills and would like to work in the concession booths at home sporting events. Selling, serving, setting up, and cleaning are some of the duties involved.

Fish Club

Open to 7th and 8th graders. For students who are interested in learning about the wonderful world of fish keeping. Students learn proper fish aquarium maintenance while helping maintain existing tanks in the school. There are many tanks set up in classrooms and offices throughout the building.

Science Olympiad

Open to 7th and 8th graders. Science Olympiad is a competitive academic science team. There are 23 events that encompass life science, Earth & space science, physical science, chemistry, technology & engineering, and inquiry & the nature of science.

Weight-lifting Club

Open to 7th and 8th grade students who are interested in staying fit. This club meets 3 days a week from January to Spring Break after school until 4:15. Students run, walk, or jog a mile, then workout.

Robotics Club

Open to 7th and 8th grade students interested in building fun electronic projects. No prior robot building experience required.

Scrabble Club

Open to 7th and 8th grade students interested in learning Scrabble tips and tricks. Did you know that the word welcome is worth 14 points, unless you play it as a bingo, then it’s worth 50 points. What’s a bingo? Join Scrabble Club and find out. You don’t have to be an expert to play, beginners welcome.

Japanese Club

Open to 7th and 8th grade students interested in Japanese language and the culture. You do not need to be in Japanese classes. This club meets once a month and does different activities such as origami, chopstick races, movies, calligraphy, and more.

SHO- Students Helping Others

Open to 8th grade students interested in being ambassadors for our school. Students work with students in conflict, tutor and mentor, and help new students become acclimated to our school. This program begins in the spring of 7th grade when staff members recommend students based on academic success, integrity, reliability, and someone that others go to when needing a peer to talk to.

Spanish Club

Open to 8th grade students presently enrolled in Spanish 1. Students will meet once a month to learn additional information about the Spanish language and related cultures.

EVENTS

Chess Tournament

CMS hosts a chess tournament in the spring during SRT. This event lasts several days and has been a lot of fun. This tournament is open to all 7th and 8th graders.

Battle of the Books

New to CMS in the spring of the 2015- 2016 school year! The Battle will be open to all 7th and 8th grade students. Teams of 4-5 students will be formed and will read the books selected by last year’s students. Students will meet in the media center to read and work with their team. The book list can be found online on the Chesterton Middle School Homepage.
